Elimu Scholarship

Background...

Elimu is a Swahili word for education. Elimu Scholarship is a shared vision among the founders. Having been raised in different parts of Kenya, the common thread between the Nuru Center founders is the fact we were all raised in rural Kenya. Growing up in rural areas exposed us to people living in utter poverty. It is with this background that we sat down and decided to make a change by addressing some of the ills affecting rural Kenya.

One of the great challenges that poverty posses is access to education. In Kenya, primary school education is free. However, high school education, while slightly subsidized by the government, is not free. This leads to a lot of children dropping out of school after standard eight (8th grade) due to lack of funds. The Elimu Scholarship fund gives these kids a chance at secondary school education and beyond, an opportunity that they'd otherwise not have.

As of the beginning of 2012, Nuru Center is providing scholarships to eleven very needy and deserving students. We are proud of the fact that the first class we provided scholarships are candidates in 2012. They will sit for the K.C.S.E. exam at the end of the year. They have shown a lot of promise and we expect at least four of the five to pass the exams in flying colors and be admitted to the university.

2012 Goals...

In addition to continuing to sponsor the eleven students, we plan on sponsoring four more deserving students joining secondary school in February. These students will be chosen based on their financial need. These are students who will graduate from primary school and would not otherwise be able to further their education. The most probable fate for them would be to drop out of school and get some menial work to support themselves and the rest of their family - continuing the cycle of poverty.
